And the money from those licenses goes directly into supporting our big game herds. Hunters were the ones who started reintroducing big game animals into areas where they had been wiped out from settlers over hunting them. Without hunters it's safe to say that there would be no elk, big horned sheep or mule deer in Utah and many other western states. No wild buffalo, that are now thriving across many states in America. Hunters keep populations in check.

Every year there are thousands of animals that suffer from starvation during the winter months due to an over population of animals and lack of food. Also a hunter shooting an animal is a much more humane way to die then by starvation or being eaten alive by a bear or mountain lion. Hunters are also responsible for billions of dollars in retail sales and thousands of jobs across America every year.

Hunting is an American tradition, it's a part of who we are. Americans have been hunting for hundreds of years and man has been hunting since the beginning of time. It's in our blood and a part of who we are. To deny that predatory instinct is to deny that we're human. We're the top predator for a reason and we do a great job of sustaining our wildlife through out America.

Choosing a Watermaker For Your Boat

Over the past few months, we have been working to improve our trawler's ability to operate independently from shore. Soon, we hope to be cruising to the Bahamas where being independent is a necessity. First there was an inverter, now we have installed a watermaker.

Today's watermakers use a moderate amount of power to turn undrinkable salt water into clean fresh water. A well-made, properly maintained watermaker can drastically improve comfort while cruising. A watermaker is a piece of equipment that requires a little upkeep for its constant operation. But when you become knowledgeable with the function of the device, use it regularly and keep it in proper working order, a watermaker is in fact a wonder to behold.

Why would you want a watermaker? There are several reasons to consider installing a watermaker aboard your boat.

1. It will reduce your boat's weight and improve performance since you don't have to fill the water tanks. It is a worthwhile endeavor as 50 gallons of water weighs over 400lbs.
2. They will extend your range of cruising. Not having to design your passage around water refills amounts to more choices for selecting your route.
3. It will save you money in ports where clean water can be very expensive. Many Bahamian ports charge as much as 25¢ per gallon, that's $75.00 for our 300-gallon tank.
4. They will provide a protected water supply onboard, in particular in parts of the world where the water quality is questionable. This helps you steer clear of health risks that can be found in contaminated water.

How does reverse osmosis work? Reverse osmosis watermakers create fresh water by placing salt water under pressure at about 800 psi and forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane. Water molecules can pass through the membrane, but virtually all other molecules (salt, bacteria, etc.) cannot pass through the membrane. The residual condensed seawater and contaminants, referred to as brine, are then discharged overboard and the fresh water is retained. It is a constant process that turns 10% of the incoming salt water into fresh water. Ninety percent of the incoming water is discarded.

What type watermaker is best? Other than the desired water output, a crucial question is how the watermaker will be powered, i.e. battery, 120V AC or powered by a belt from the engine? AC driven systems will require a generator to operate so their use is not best on smaller boats. Belt driven systems require an engine to be operating so they have drawbacks too. DC watermakers are the best choice on small boats because of their smaller size and current draw. Our Katadyn 80 watermaker uses about 8 amps when operating.

How much water do you really need? The World Health Organization recommends at least one quart or one liter of fresh water per person per day to sustain hydration. Clearly, that figure is for survival circumstances, not cruising in the Bahamas. A fresh water intake of two gallons per person per day is more realistic, for drinking, showering and cooking. On our trawler, we have measured our daily consumption at about 10 gallons per day for two people; of course, we don't waste water but yet don't ration it either. Your water use will also depend on the type of weather and the kind of behaviors you perform during the day. The level of perspiration when resting in the shade of the bimini is quite unlike that from scrubbing the decks. On a well-appointed vessel with a large watermaker, a crew of 6 or 8 might use 100 gallons per day, taking hot showers and washing clothes. The end result is that your water utilization can vary significantly based on your daily life and your capability to make fresh drinking water. We chose to go with the 80 gallon per day unit partly because of the space we had to install it.

What are the energy requirements? The greater the water output the greater the current draw. Using 10 gallons per person per day requires about 180 minutes of watermaker operation for our PowerSurvivor 80E, equaling 24Ah of battery capacity consumption per day. You must plan accordingly to replenish those amp hours back into your battery.

Can Walking and Running Help Prevent Strokes?

Strokes affect over 700,000 people every year. We're going to cover what you can do to help prevent yourself and your loved one's from getting a stroke. Or, at least a better chance, than if you did nothing.

As with all organs in the body, the brain needs nutrients and oxygen in order to function properly. These life-sustaining products are delivered to the brain by the blood that travels through our circulatory system. They're a serious health disability that can affect you, regardless of your age.

Some of the leading poor health choices that can lead to getting strokes are: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are some poor habits that you must get rid of. Next in line is if you have high cholesterol or diabetes. High blood pressure and blood clots' can lead to a stroke. Obesity...is one of the leading causes that opens doors for you in the stroke department. It doesn't matter if your ten pounds overweight or two hundred pounds overweight, if shedding some pounds is what it takes...then let's attack the problem!

Sticking with a daily exercise habit is a simple matter of commitment. You must develop a daily thirty minutes a day habit, that you do it without thinking. Everyday you brush you teeth, comb your hair, go to work and dozens of other daily activities that you do as a habit. A daily walk as simple as it sounds, will help to prevent you from getting a stroke.

Your blood circulatory system running throughout your body carrying nutrients and oxygen is foremost of importance in our talk on strokes. Lack of proper flow to your brain, possibly a clot--is a cause of a stroke. This is what you can do, starting tomorrow. When you get home from work, slip into some running shoes and running shorts. Turn around and head back out the front door you just came through.

Make this a daily habit. At first you won't be able to jog past...two or three of your next door neighbor's houses. That's ok! Go slow into a walk for a few. Once your breathing returns to normal, step up the pace a bit into your jog once again. Easy does it, all the way around your entire city block. That's if you live in the city. If not...then get into your trusty car and mark off a half of mile, mile marker. Go ahead and mark off another mile or two at half mile, mile markers for in the months ahead, you're going to need them.

As you can see I've led you into a simple run--walk daily habit save-you-a-stroke plan! In time the pounds are going to melt away, because your distance is going to increase another mile or so every month. Yes, in a year you could very well be running twelve miles! I did twenty years ago, when forty-five pounds were melted away and have stayed off ever since. Combine this little stroke prevention plan with some good nutrition habits and you'll be a much healthier person or runner to boot!

Advanced Swimming Workouts are for those athletes who are ready to graduate to the next level of their swim training. There are tons of ways to make each swimming workout more difficult. Here are 4 Ways to Advance your Swimming Workouts:

1. Create a Faster Interval
This might seem obvious and it is. However, make sure you are doing it correctly. If you are currently swimming 100yards Freestyle on 2:00 you don't want to suddenly bump it up to 1:30. You will need to gradually decrease the interval in your more advanced swimming workouts. Pay attention to your breathing and heart rate. If you are killing yourself in the top levels of your heart rate...eventually you are going to over-train yourself and that leads to drop out. Don't get carried away.

2. Vary your Stroke
If you haven't already been using all four of the competitive strokes you should be. Each stroke offers a unique use of your muscles and interaction with the water. As you might know freestyle is the easiest, then backstroke, breaststroke, and the most difficult...butterfly. By introducing the other strokes into your workout you will amp up the intensity and have a way more difficult workout.

3. Use a Pull Buoy
By eliminating the use of your legs and kicking throws a whole new dynamic into your advanced swimming workouts. You use your legs for propulsion and it makes it easier to swim. Without your legs you remove the propulsion, and you also have to balance your stroke with your entire core instead of your legs. Using that large group of muscles is difficult.

4. Swim Farther
Just had to add the super obvious point. If your regular advanced swimming workout is 2,500yards then add another 500yards. To most people this will add close to 10 minutes of extra swimming time in their workout. An extra ten minutes that you are not use to swimming. You should be able to add yardage in a 90minute workout until you reach about 5,000yards.

Hopefully these help create more advanced swimming workouts. Don't use all the advancements at one time. Choose one and implement within a few weeks, then another, then another. This way you don't burn out or overwork your body. Remember, if it isn't fun you need to change your workout or back off for a little a get some rest. Fast is Fun!

Two Windsurfing Tips for Beginners

Low speed winds can be annoying for a very simple reason: if the wind isn't strong enough, you're stranded on the beach praying to the gods of wind for the wind to pick up. High-speed winds can be annoying as well; perhaps bothersome is a better word. In strong winds, 25 knots and upward, it can be difficult to control your board.

When the wind is strong enough it can turn your board into an airplane wing. Let me explain what I mean by that. As the wind flows over the top and bottom of the board, a low-pressure area forms above the board and a high-pressure area forms underneath the board which will result in the board lifting off. This can occur while you're sailing at planning speed. What will happen to you? You will spin out.

Things don't have to be that way. You don't have to wipe out just because the wind is too strong. To stop your board from taking off, you must make sure that the windward rail isn't higher than the leeward rail; if it is, your board will lift off. Keep the windward rail lower and the wind will push the board down. To keep the board in the water during gusts, press your heels down and lift your toes up (while in the foot straps of course). Again, the wind will push the board down when you do this.

Sailing from point A to point B, then back to point A, may seem like a simple task, but for the novice rider it may seem like a big pain in the unmentionables. Sure sailing downwind is a breeze, getting from point A to point B is a simple task. But sailing upwind, from point B back to point A, may prove to be more difficult.

Whether you're going downwind or upwind, always keep your eyes on your target, keep your eyes on the road so to speak. If you look at your feet, at your boom, and god knows where elsewhere, it can be easy to lose track of your direction. Pay attention and watch where you're going.

To get going downwind, line your board across the wind. Raise the clew off the water by tilting the mast upwind to go in a straight line. The sail will feel light as it comes over the center of the board. Sheet in gently on the boom to power up, and you are off to point B. Windsurfing is not hard to learn and it is really fun.

To return to point A, you will have to sail upwind. The first thing you must do is to lower the clew; to do this you have to tilt the mast away from the wind. The sail will open slightly when you do this. While the clew is lowered the board will turn upwind. Keep turning until you're in the direction you want to go.

Be careful - the sail will loose power and the board will stall if the board goes too far upwind. Lift the clew up by tilting the mast upwind if you feel the sail is losing power. When raising the clew you have to pull in gently. The board will turn away from the wind and will pick up speed when it regains power.

Sailing downwind and upwind is not very difficult. To get them down perfectly all you have to do is practice. Learning to sail upwind is a definitive must. How else can you return to the point you started from? It's not like you will always have the wind behind you.
